Amnesty International

Amnesty International's 2006 report made the news today (o, boy!).

Among the things it pointed out:

1. The...ahem...war on terror has created more terror.

2. The victims of the war on terror are the poor.

3. The US and UK can't claim any international legitimacy if they themselves employ totalitarian tactics. If a nation detains people without charge, or sends them away for outsourced torture, they're no better than your average banana republic. (Hey - Canada's complicit in all this too! So happy we've given people more reasons to hate us! At least we don't have that pesky Geneva Convention to worry about any more.)

The CBC didn't choose to report the report's criticisms of Canada. They did, however, report the following sad but true words of Amnesty International's Secretary General, Irene Khan:

"There is no doubt that it [the war on terror] has given a new lease on life to old-fashioned repression."
