finally a letter to the PM about marriage....

Here's my letter to Mr Harper:

Dear Mr Harper,

I am writing to you as a gay Canadian voter who is concerned about equality before the law. I believe that civil marriage is an institution that should be available to me.

I am getting married in October, and I would prefer that my government support my right to marry.

Not only is the idea of undoing equal marriage unpopular and legally dubious, but it is also the wrong thing to do. Canadians, through Parliament, have already decided that Canadian marriage should be available to people of any sexual orientation.

I understand that you would like to open a debate on this issue in Parliament. I do not believe that that would be in the best interests of Canadians; it would certainly not be in my interest. I have trouble understanding why you would plan to remove legislation that provided equal access to a civil institution for a group whose right to equality before the law is protected by the Charter. Why, sir, should I not get married?

I would like you to send me information on your government's position on this issue, if possible. Please contact me and let me know more about your plans for putting marriage equality before Parliament for a second time.

Yours,

-Andrew
